Enclosure

Enclosure is not just a matter of fencing off land. To me, it’s a question of both setting limits and also owning land. Enclosure has been part of history all the way back, and influenced cultures on how people used the landscape. Here’s what enclosure is, and how it has affected society over time.

Enclosure is the process by which land that was once available for everyone to share becomes parceled off into private holdings. This goes back a long way, when land was very valuable. Owners could exercise more control over their property by fencing it in.

The impact of enclosure on agricultural practices and land ownership

England’s biggest moment for enclosure was at the time of the Agricultural Revolution in the 1700s and 1800s. Landowners started fencing in their land in order to grow food more efficiently so they could make more money. That meant that many small farmers and communities lost the common land they needed to graze their animals and grow their crops.

Enclosure transformed how people farmed and owned land. The Hongfa Shunda waterproof electrical enclosure enabled landlords to experiment with new farming techniques and to produce more food. But many small farmers were pushed off, and could use the common land no longer.
